Each one of
us has a God shaped hole, what will you fill yours with?
Although we
live in days when happiness is equated with materialism and technology, there is
a level of human need that these cannot touch. You can have everything and be
absolutely miserable. In fact, even friends and family, or the most perfect
man-woman relationship cannot fill the God shaped hole that exists down deep in
every human being. All the bravado and cockiness that characterizes success is
just noise. For many, behind all of this is an aching for something that is
elusive and intangible. It is a need for a relationship with the One who created
you. You were made for it.
Unfortunately,
human nature also has an aversion to God that separates us from Him. We need
Him, but we hate Him. He is considered a threat to our happiness, because as our
Creator, He has the absolute right to direct or control our lives. As a result,
you may acknowledge Him and try to appease Him, but because he poses a threat to
your freedom it's an uneasy relationship. In fact, it's not a relationship at
all.
That's where
the Good News comes in. Out of His kindness and a love that overrides our
indifference and animosity, God sent His Son to reconcile us to Him. Jesus
Christ 's death on the Cross satisfies all the demands of God's law, which we
have broken. The Bible clearly states that each one of us is guilty before God
(Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of
God"). The penalty for breaking His Law is death (Romans 6:23 "The
wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus
Christ").
What this
means is that when Christ died he was dying to take the place of people who
really deserved to be up on the cross, people like you and me. As a result of
His death, those who turn from their rebellion and place their trust in Jesus
Christ are given a new status with God. They go from being enemies to being
friends, from being under God's judgment to being forgiven. God enters their
lives in a new and personal way, giving them a tenderness and a responsiveness
towards Him. Instead of trying to appease Him, they genuinely love Him. Their
whole life changes. It is absolutely the most wonderful thing that could ever
happen to anyone.
God's love
is so great. This offer is for you. No matter who you are, or what you've done,
or where you've been, God is calling you to put your faith in His Son, Jesus
Christ, to save you from the day when God exercises His righteous judgment
against sin (the breaking of His laws, in both spirit and deed). Hebrew 9:27
states, "It is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes
judgment." Jesus put it like this: "Come to me all you who are weary
and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matt 11:28).
